General Safety Tips
The following are suggestions relative to the criminal incident described in this alert:
- Trust your instincts. If you feel that you may be in danger, seek out others, local law enforcement, or an open Tulane facility that has Campus Safety Officers posted.
- Be aware of your surroundings, especially when walking alone.
- Avoid individuals who don’t respect you, ignore personal boundaries, make you feel guilty, or are aggressive.
- Let a trusted friend or contact know when you are meeting a new person and if that person begins making you uncomfortable.
- Try not to walk alone during late-night hours. Walk in groups, whenever you can, there is always safety in numbers.
- Always seek affirmative consent before touching another individual.
If you have experienced sexual misconduct or think you may have experienced it, help is available. It is not your fault, and there are resources on campus and in the community to provide support and help you heal. Help is available at Tulane, whether a survivor wants to report an incident to the police, the university, a confidential resource or just wants to talk to someone.
Reporting and Resources
Reporting sexual assault is a very sensitive and nuanced matter. Delayed reporting of sexual assault is very common. Tulane University encourages any victim of sexual assault or other crime to report, regardless of the time passed since the date of incident.
We at Tulane recognize that deciding to report sexual misconduct and choosing how to proceed are difficult decisions. We recognize that your feelings about whether to report an incident and how to proceed may change over time. We support all survivors of sexual misconduct during this decision-making process.
